Official Partner of National Team

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) have signed a sponsorship agreement with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) as a continuation of its effort to galvanise fan support of the National Team through the “Team Malaysia” campaign.

Through this sponsorship and partnership deal, TM is now the Official Partner of the National Football Team, further elevating TM’s role as an enabler in Malaysia’s sports industry cutting across all types of sports.

This milestone also paves the way for TM to increase its support of football development in Malaysia.

Signing the agreement on behalf of TM was Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, and Rozalila Abdul Rahman, its Chief Marketing Officer while FAM was represented by its Deputy President, KDYTM Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah and Lt. Jen. Dato' Azzuddin Ahmad, Secretary General of FAM.

Dato' Subahan Kamal, Vice President, FAM cum Malaysian Football Team Manager together with Datuk Dr Halim Shafie, Chairman of TM were also present at the ceremony in Wisma FAM Friday (8/7/11).

The 4-year agreement which ends 30 June 2015, makes it possible for TM’s logo to appear on the Malaysian football team’s training jerseys as well as various sporting goods, training gear, and official formal wear. As part of the pact, TM will also be sending two (2) deserving Malaysian footballers accompanied by a coach to attend training sessions conducted by Manchester United in the United Kingdom or Dubai, UAE.

Speaking at the event, Datuk Dr Halim Shafie, shared, “Through this partnership, TM has joined hands with FAM to directly contribute towards the development and management of the national football team. It is hoped that with this contribution, the national team will receive a boost and further motivation to perform better while bearing the national flag. Besides that, we will also promote the national team and rally the public to show their support at the stadium during matches, which will in turn get other fans and supporters to do the same.”

“TM is also committed to increase awareness among the public that they too, can play a role in helping national athletes achieve victory and through the Team Malaysia campaign that we have launched earlier, we hope that we can get everyone’s undivided support regardless of the outcome of the match.” added Datuk Dr. Halim.

The partnership is yet another TM effort through its Team Malaysia campaign to further champion national pride through sports by gathering the support of 28 million Malaysians to encourage the national team to scale greater heights and achieve better performance.

It is TM’s hope that this effort will unite the passion of all Malaysians together under one flag to cheer on the national squad, and ignite the spirit of the athletes in their continous strive for excellence and put Malaysia’s name on the world sports map.

In pursuit of increasing the potential of Malaysian sporting talents, TM has consistently played a leading role in identifying opportunities and providing platforms for positive transformation of youths through sports.

Time to improve..

The National Under-23 team had an opportunity to identify some areas that need improvement after losing 2-1 to Thailand in an international friendly match at Rajmangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thursday.
“Thailand is a good team but they won because of some blunders on our part and now we have to work to rectify it,” said Chief Coach, Ong Kim Swee.

In the match between two teams preparing for pre-Olympic qualifiers, Thailand led on the 19th minute while Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim equalized for Malaysia in the second half. Thailand took advantage of an individual mistake to score the winner in the 86th minute.

The national Harimau Muda ‘A’ team will have an opportunity to test its strength again when the youngsters play the Singapore Under-23 team in the republic on Jan 24.

Malaysia has been drawn to play Pakistan in the first round of the pre-Olympics, with the first match in Kuala Lumpur (23 Feb) and the return leg in Karachi (9 March).

“The players gave a good fight all the way. They played well in the second half and I hope the players know that they have to improve as they prepare for the pre-Olympics,” said Kim Swee.

After the Singapore match, the Under-23 team will participate in the Super League which kicks-off on 29 January.

The last time Malaysia qualified for the Olympics were in 1980 but did not participate in the Moscow games because of a boycott. Malaysia also qualified for the 1972 Munich games and played in some high profile matches against top teams.

Malaysia defeated USA 3-0 through goals by Shahruddin Abdullah, Ibrahim Salleh and Wan Zawawi, The team, lead by skipper M. Chandran (now Datuk), lost 6-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to West Germany.

Thirty-five teams have entered the fray to grab the three-and-a-half slots reserved for Asia in the 2012 Olympics in London. The 11 winners of first round will join 13 highest ranked team in the second round where they will again play in a home-and-away format on June 19 and Jun 23, 2011.

The 12 winners will then be divided into three groups of four teams each in the third round. Again, a home-and-away format from September 21, 2011, to March 14, 2012, will determine the winners who will represent the continent in the Olympics.

Three second-placed teams from the third round will play in a playoff at a centralised venue from March 25 to 29, 2012, and the winners of this group will meet the representatives of CAF for a berth in the Olympics.
